Demond “De” McKenzie brings over 20 years of experience in education and leadership development to his work as a Leadership Coach and Education Consultant at RTI International.  He is a versatile and forward-thinking administrator with wide-ranging experiences in developing innovative, educational initiatives with verified results in increased academic achievement. Dedicated to community engagement, positive school culture and innovative, instructional practices that prepare all children for success, McKenzie maintains an avid passion and deep commitment to educational equity and access. As an expert in professional learning, Mr. McKenzie leads design and facilitation of professional development for educators on topics ranging from diversity to school reform. He has received extensive training from the Center of Creative Leadership. McKenzie has substantial experience as a practitioner, having served as a high school math teacher and coach, high school assistant principal for a small learning community, district-level administrator for teacher retention, director of school services and state-level education consultant for innovative schools.
 

Laurie M. Baker is an educational consultant with national experience in the areas of innovative school design and educational leadership. Her research interests and areas of expertise include issues pertaining to poverty, race, and rurality. Dr. Baker has substantial experience as a practitioner, having served as a high school English teacher, middle school assistant principal, high school assistant principal for at-risk students, and early college high school principal. Dr. Baker’s published research includes a quantitative study of the relationship between local fiscal capacity and student achievement in public schools. She has led an array of large-scale educational reform projects in Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina. She is also a court-appointed Guardian ad Litem, an advocate for abused and neglected children. Throughout her career and volunteerism, Dr. Baker has sought to understand and combat the effects of poverty on our children and our communities.

Denise began her teaching career in 2002 at Davie County High School as a Math and Business Education teacher.  In 2007, she became a member of the founding staff of Davie Early College High School. As the lead teacher, she helped teachers embrace the Common Instructional Framework and to make the transition from traditional classrooms to student-led classrooms. She was named Teacher of the Year in 2005, District Teacher of the Year for Davie County in 2008 and is a 2012 graduate of the Kenan Fellows Program for Curriculum and Leadership Development at NC State University. In 2012 Absher, left to join the Early College partner, NC New Schools as an Instructional Coach.  She came back to Davie County Early College in February of 2015 to serve as the third Principal for Davie Early College.  Before entering education, Absher worked in sales and marketing for Eastman Kodak Company and Compuware Corporation. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from UNC-Greensboro, a Master’s degree in Instructional Technology from Appalachian State University and will completed her coursework at High Point University in Education Administration for Principal Licensure in December of 2017.
